Pinched Vessel - Ceramics I
Introduction to pinching.
Students will practice by creating three pinch pots using smaller pieces of clay. Once they are proficient with the pinching method they pinch two larger identical pinch pots, attach them together to form a sphere, then pinch out a neck and feet or a foot ring. Next students press a planed design into the surface and use glaze to enhance the textures. The lecture includes a discussion on the proper aesthetics of a vessel's exterior profile and pattern.

Coiled Creation - Ceramics I
Students will create a coiled vessel or sculpture with a planned dynamic pattern on the exterior of their vessel. The vessel may show coils in a pattern or it can be smoothed with pressed textures displayed on the exterior. Students will choose to stain the surface or use a transparent glaze that breaks over edges. The lecture includes a discussion on the elements and principles of design including balance, texture, symmetry, movement, and pattern.

A Sacred Container - Ceramics I
Students will create a box and lid using hard slabs and plan a decoration on the exterior that represents a message. The decoration can be completed with slip trailing, low relief, or mishma, or sgraffito. Students can choose colored slips, underglazes, or glazes. The lecture includes a discussion on the meaning and intent behind works of ceramic art and how to convey messages in their art work.
